As the days become cooler, the Moving Art project is drawing to a close. At Cooinda Village participants are learning the skills of puppetry performance with artist and puppeteer, Helena Gibson, while at Alkoomi Nursing Home, participants are exploring visual arts with Expressive Art's Therapist, Grace Beer.
Puppetry participant's have been getting to know the puppets, ranging from a variety of animal hand puppets to large rod puppets and families of puppets made from ordinary things you might find around the house such as rubber gloves and feather dusters. Participants have been fascinated by the mechanics of the rod puppets and together with their partners have enjoyed the experience of making their own rod puppets. In recent sessions, participants have been learning how to animate their puppet through movements of the heads, arms and legs and there has been much laughter as spontaneous improvisations have emerged. Musical instruments, music and singing have an enriched the experience providing many opportunities for exploration and creativity.
At Alkoomi Nursing Home, participants have begun to create a streetscape which is providing opportunities for people to reminisce about houses they have lived in throughout their lives as they recreate them on paper, complete with beautiful flower gardens.
To celebrate the completion of the Moving Arts project, an Art Exhibition and Social Dance are to be held in April. The Art Exhibition will feature a selection of works completed by participants and volunteers in the Art sessions, plus a short puppetry performance and a screening of the digital stories that have been created. The Art Exhibition will open, in the foyer of Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre (BPAC) at 6.00pm on Thursday April 29th and be on display until April 26th. The Social Dance will be held at St Joseph's Hall Thursday April 26th from 11.00- 2.00pm and will feature music by Don Dunnachie, Merle Nolan and Dennis Tucker and dance demonstrations by Ken and Leila Gibbs and the Line Dancers.
Cooinda Village, Benalla Health and Alkoomi Nursing home invite friends, family and general public to join with us to celebrate the many achievements of people living with dementia.
