“Moving Art” is an exciting creative arts project for people living with dementia. The project, which will be facilitated by Cooinda Village in partnership with Benalla Health and Alkoomi Nursing home, will feature a workshop program, to be held between October 2011 and April 2012. The project is being funded through the Australian Government’s Dementia Community Support Grants and will culminate with an exhibition of art works and puppetry at Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre and a social dance to bring the people living with dementia and the wider community together.
The project will call upon the skills and talents of local artists to present workshops in dance, visual art, puppetry and digital story telling. Dance Movement Therapist, Maeve Larkin and Expressive Art’s Therapist, Grace Beer will lead arts based processes for self expression, communication and to have fun. Puppeteer, Helena Gibson will introduce participants to the art of “hands on” puppetry and improvised story telling. Young film makers, Jake and Sam Bowtell will produce short interactive video narratives to capture participants stories.
As the population ages, dementia prevalence in the Benalla region is expected to rise and will need to be catered for by high quality care and greater community awareness. According to Access Economics calculations, the number of people affected by dementia in the Benalla region in 2010 was 856 and is predicted to rise to 1237 people by 2020. Through the arts, the “Moving Art”project will provide innovative new ways for people affected by dementia to communicate, express themselves and continue to participate in community life. The Australian Government recognises this problem and the “Moving Art” project is one of many nationwide programs that have been supported through the Dementia Community Support Grants Program. To date funding of approximately $7.8 million has been provided for over 190 projects as part of this program.
The project will see the North East Support & Action for Youth (NESAY) supporting young people to assist and engage with participants. Cooinda Village also invites the participation and support of families, carers and other community members to learn new ways to relate to relatives while engaging in enjoyable activities.
The workshop program will culminate in an exciting exhibition giving people living with dementia the opportunity to showcase and be proud of their achievements. The exhibition will feature art works, digital stories, and a puppet performance. Finally, a social dance will be hosted for people living with dementia to join with their families, friends and the broader Benalla community.
